1825年伊利运河的通航在美国的交通史中意义非凡。然而,该运河的竞争力曾一度因为航道安全问题而有所降低。19世纪30年代后,伊利运河开始逐渐与中西部的水陆交通网紧密衔接起来。一方面,伊利运河沿线的贸易商出于运输成本考虑迫切希望该运河能降低通行税;另一方面,美国政府出于国家对外贸易通道安全性考虑,在这一时期开始对伊利运河进行持续地扩建,并在1846年和1849年两次降低运河通行税。这些举措进一步降低了伊利运河的运输成本,极大地促进了纽约州经济的繁荣。
Abstract:
The navigation of the Erie Canal was extremely meaningful in American traffic history. However, the competitiveness of this canal was decreased because of security issue. After 1830s, the Erie Canal began to be connected to transportation network in the Midwest gradually. On the one hand, merchants hoped that the toll could be reduced considering transportation costs. On the other hand, given the security of foreign trade channel, the U.S. government began to enlarge the Erie Canal constantly, and reduced the toll in 1846 and 1849. These measures further decreased transportation costs of the Erie Canal, thereby promoting the prosperity of the State of New York.
